1838 Matron Head (Coronet Head) Large Cent

Era / Decade

1830s (Dated 1838)

Material

100% Copper; high density and weight characteristic of early American numismatics.

Condition

Good (G-4 to G-6). The coin shows significant circulation wear. While the date '1838' is clearly visible and the outline of Lady Liberty is distinct, the hair details are worn flat, and the word 'LIBERTY' on the headband is partially obscured. The surfaces show dark toning and minor environmental pitting/corrosion.

Demand Level

Strong. Early US copper always has a dedicated 'Type Set' buyer base. It is a 'liquidity' item in numismatics.

Resale Value

Estimated Resale Value

$15.00 (Low) - $22.00 (Mid) - $35.00 (High)

Estimated Retail Value

$25.00 - $40.00

Comparable Sales

Recent eBay sold listings for 1838 Large Cents in 'Good' condition range from $18 to $28 plus shipping. Prices jump significantly if the coin reaches 'Very Fine' grade (over $60), but this example does not meet that threshold.

Description

Authentic 1838 United States Large Cent featuring the Matron Head/Coronet design by Christian Gobrecht. This 'Penny' is nearly the size of a modern half dollar. It features Liberty facing left surrounded by 13 stars. The reverse (not pictured but standard for year) would feature 'ONE CENT' inside a laurel wreath. A staple for any early American type set collector.

Key Features

Pre-Civil War era currency; large pure copper composition; highly collectible 'Matron Head' design; clearly legible date remains the strongest selling point.

Authenticity Indicators

Correct 1838 font style; proper alignment of stars and denticles; natural aged patina that is difficult to fake on copper. Confidence level: High (common date, low incentive for high-quality counterfeits in this grade).

Flaws to Note

Significant circulation wear; loss of fine detail in Liberty's hair and headband; dark oxidation/toning; minor rim dings and surface pitting likely from being buried or stored in high humidity.

Selling Guide

Where to Sell

eBay (best for broad reach), GreatCollections (if certified), or local coin shops. eBay is recommended for raw (ungraded) coins of this value.

Selling Tips

Do NOT clean the coin; collectors prefer the original patina, and cleaning can destroy 50-90% of the value. Use a macro lens for photos to show the date clearly. List as '1838 Large Cent Matron Head' and mention 'Original Patina'. Ship in a non-PVC coin flip to protect it.
