Description
Authentic 1847 United States Large Cent featuring the Braided Hair Liberty design by Christian Gobrecht. This coin features Lady Liberty facing left on the obverse surrounded by 13 stars, with the date 1847 clearly visible below the bust. On the reverse (not fully visible but inferred), it would feature a laurel wreath. The coin is currently housed in a standard 2x2 cardboard and mylar coin flip.
Key Features
Pre-Civil War era currency; large copper format (larger than a modern quarter); 1847 is a common but highly collectible date for type set collectors; historical significance as 'old copper'.
Authenticity Indicators
Correct diameter and 'thick' rim profile for the period; natural wear patterns; specific 1847 date font style matches US Mint specimens. High confidence in authenticity based on visual patina and strike characteristics.
Flaws to Note
Significant surface wear, uneven toning/discoloration (dark spots near the eye and across the bust), potential environmental damage or 'verdigris' starting to form. Cardboard holder is damaged and written over.
Selling Guide
Where to Sell
eBay (highest reach), local coin shops, or GreatCollections for higher-end coins. For a raw coin like this, eBay or r/Coins4Sale are best.
Selling Tips
Do NOT clean the coin, as this destroys numismatic value. Take clear, high-resolution macro photos of both the obverse and reverse outside of the plastic if possible. Use keywords: '1847 Large Cent', 'Braided Hair', 'US Copper', 'Numismatic'. Ship in a rigid mailer to prevent the coin from being lost in sorting machines.
