1846 Braided Hair Large Cent, Small Date Variety
United States Mint (Philadelphia) · Collectibles & Antiques > Coins & Paper Money > Coins: US > Large Cents

Era / Decade
1846 (Mid-19th Century). Identified by the specific 1846 date stamping and Christian Gobrecht's Braided Hair design which ran from 1839-1857.
Material
100% Copper. These were substantial coins, much larger and heavier than modern cents, measuring approximately 27.5mm.
Condition
Very Good (VG) to Fine (F) estimate. Visible wear on Lady Liberty's hair buns and the word 'LIBERTY' on the tiara is legible but worn. Surface shows dark toning and some micro-pitting/corrosion, which is common for copper of this age.
Demand Level
Strong. Large cents are a staple of U.S. coin collecting and have a very steady, liquid market with constant demand.
Resale Value
Estimated Resale Value
$20.00 - $35.00 (Low: pitted/damaged, Mid: Average circulated, High: Clean surfaces with sharp details).
Estimated Retail Value
$25.00 - $45.00 (Current numismatic market value for mid-grade circulated examples).
Comparable Sales
Recent eBay sold listings for 1846 Large Cents in VG-F condition range from $22 to $38 depending on the 'eye appeal' and lack of green corrosion (verdigris).
Description
Authentic 1846 United States Large Cent featuring the Braided Hair / Matron Head design. This coin was minted in Philadelphia and features 13 stars surrounding the bust of Liberty. The reverse (not pictured) would feature a laurel wreath enclosing the words 'ONE CENT'. It has a dark brown chocolate patina typical of mid-19th-century copper.
Key Features
Historical significance as pre-Civil War currency; 'Small Date' variety (most common for this year but highly collectible); high copper content; significant 'Large Cent' size which is popular for type-set collectors.
Authenticity Indicators
Correct font for the 1846 date; specific 'dentils' (the teeth-like marks) around the rim; natural mid-19th-century wear patterns. Confidence level: High, though weight verification is always recommended for coins.
Flaws to Note
Heavy circulation wear; surface oxidation and dark toning; minor rim dings visible at the top edge; potential environmental damage/pitting from being buried or improperly stored.
Selling Guide
Where to Sell
eBay (best for broad reach), GreatCollections (if graded), or local coin shops. For a quick flip without fees, Facebook numismatic groups are excellent.
Selling Tips
Do NOT clean this coin; collectors prefer original patina and cleaning will ruin the value. Use a macro lens for photography to show the 'LIBERTY' text clearly. Ship in a 'flip' or cardboard 2x2 holder inside a padded mailer with tracking.
